Spring Equinox marks a high point in the northern hemisphere calendar and, along with Shetland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland, we look forward to the end of the long, dark winter nights and the beginning of warmer, lighter spring days.
Although this may be a time of balance in terms of darkness and daylight, it’s also a time of battle as far as the elements are concerned and goes by the old Orcadian name of ‘Vore Tullye’ meaning ‘Spring Struggle’. It’s when, according to folklore, the Mither o’ the Sea (the benign force of the summer sea) and Teran (the spirit of winter) do battle for supremacy. Our islands bear witness to ferocious storms and torrential rain throughout March and April, until the Mither o’ the Sea finally subdues Teran and restores warmth and calm to the waters. Inevitably, as autumn gives way to winter, battle commences once more!
We created THE LIGHT 17 Year Old, to celebrate the days of spring and summer in Orkney – a time to emerge from our winter hibernation, renewed and refreshed with a spring in our step, ready to embrace the warm bright days of summer and spend days adventuring and exploring.
Matured in refill American oak casks, THE LIGHT is naturally pale and bright in colour with sweet notes of tropical fruits, freshly grated nutmeg and creamy vanilla. These distinctive flavours are offset by woody hints of cedar and oak, wrapped up in our trademark light peat smoke.
