In 2011, seven Orkney men took part in a charity row from Aith in the Shetland Islands to Vagur in the Faroe Islands. Inspired by the challenges of their 186 nautical mile voyage and the sense of team spirit that their adventure invoked, three years later the group purchased Fridarey – a 23-foot clinker-built Shetland Yoal or ‘Ness Yoal’ – and Orkney Rowing Club was established.
Our own Warehouse Team Leader, Keith Moar, is one of the Club’s founders and along with his fellow members, is the inspiration behind this special edition, released to support the Club’s work in the community and on the water. From teaching and training in the coastal waters of Kirkwall Bay to time trials further afield, the Club is very much a community-based enterprise, encouraging like-minded people to come together and share their passion for coastal rowing while learning new skills. Every year, the Club raises significant funds to support local charities here in Orkney and, in February 2018, became a registered charity itself. … and the whisky
ORKNEY ROWING CLUB is a new expression of Highland Park, especially created by our Master Whisky Maker, Gordon Motion, and its packaging features stunning imagery captured by local photographer, Sarah Wylie. Priced at a UK RSP of £65 and bottled at 58% ABV, this whisky has been predominantly matured in first-fill bourbon casks to reveal delicious notes of heather honey, zesty root ginger, sweet vanilla, sun-dried lemon peel and toasted hazelnuts, delivered on a wave of our trademark aromatic peat smoke.
Only 4,000 bottles of ORKNEY ROWING CLUB are being released and we’re offering our Inner Circle members and visitors to our distillery and visitor experience shop the chance to make a purchase from 9th September, in advance of the whisky’s general release online on 16th September.
