Our Journey Towards Lower Impact Packaging

Our packaging has been designed to pay homage to the unique environments of our Orkney home, and as part of this, we’re working to lower the impact of our packaging as much as possible. Some of the ways we are doing this include increasing our local sourcing, reducing the volume of materials we use and increasing our recycled and recyclable packaging content. 

Increasing our locally sourced, recycled and recyclable packaging materials

• Since 2019, our packaging team has worked hard to increase the volume of recyclable, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified and UK sourced materials used in our packaging supply chain.
• 95% of our paper and board materials are FSC certified.
• 90% of our paper and board packaging is also recyclable and as a mandatory practice, all our packs now include recyclability messaging via on-pack QR code access.

Reducing the volume of our packaging materials

• Glass weight is a key focus in our drive to reduce the volume of materials we use, as it contributes to overall shipping weight and distribution related emissions.
• This year, we’ll be launching beautifully designed new bottles for our Prestige range, which have been carefully produced with a reduced glass weight.
• We’re exploring material innovations to increase the volume of recycled and recyclable content in our packaging components, including a review of our bottle closures and our use of foams and solvents.  

Piloting carbon calculator

• Carbon calculator trials are now live across our Packaging Technology and New Product Design teams.
• By using the carbon calculator, we’ll have a deeper understanding of the carbon contribution of our packaging, enabling our teams to consider ways to design impact out of our full product range, over time.
