SUPPORTING LOCAL CRAFTSPEOPLE

SUPPORTING LOCAL CRAFTSPEOPLE

Orkney-based designer, Kirsteen Stewart, is a visual communicator of extraordinary talent who helps us to source and display the work of local craftspeople at Albert Street.

When we first opened our new visitor experience store, in May 2019, we began by featuring local artists and craftspeople whose work represented a vital part of our islands’ culture and heritage. Our early exhibitors included Kevin Gauld who makes traditional Orkney Chairs, Billy Jolly who makes ‘peedie’ Creepie Stools, and Greig Harcus who makes Orkney Bride’s Cogs.

In February 2020, we expanded our exhibition space and introduced new makers. As featured in OBJECTS OF DESIRE, in our February Newsletter, we started selling as well as showcasing local creativity. Under Kirsteen’s guidance, our carefully curated collection of arts and crafts has grown to include colourful knitted creations from Ann Mackie; Harris Tweed inspired bags, purses and homeware from Fiona Mitchell; and bags and scarves rejoicing in vibrant designs, bold graphics and a vivid spectrum of colour from Kirsteen Stewart herself. Keep a look out on Kirsteen’s website over the coming weeks for further homeware items from Orkney based crafters including the beautiful work of Billy Jolly.

We’re delighted to let you know that Anne, Fiona and Kirsteen are still fulfilling online orders and can ship their wonderful creations directly to your door. As well as adding a little cheer to indoor life, this is an excellent way to support local craftspeople in Orkney through these challenging times, until we can welcome you through our doors again.
