We launched our Postcard from Orkney series earlier this year to share even more of our spectacular Orkney island home with our Tribe around the world. We’ve been posting some of our favourite images and videos from local photographers and collaborators across our blogs and social media channels and, with so many of our travel plans sidelined this year, we hope you’re enjoying your virtual experience of Orkney.

This month, it’s Sarah Wylie who’s behind the lens to give our Inner Circle a virtual tour of the islands that we are lucky enough to call home.

We’ve worked with Sarah for a number of years and if you’ve seen our charitable bottling for Orkney Rowing Club then you’ve probably already admired Sarah’s work as she captured the image we chose for the label as well as some shots of the club in action. Sarah also helped us with images of Albert Street ahead of the store opening and, more recently, she photographed dancers from Scottish Ballet at the distillery to mark the launch of our partnership bottling with them last year.

Sarah’s passion for photography began when she was a teenager and she is now in her final year at UHI Orkney College where she studies Fine Art. In her own words: “My ambition with photography is to continue to develop my skills and engage with new experiences that will broaden my knowledge of the subject. As well as focusing on notable locations of interest within Orkney, you can find beauty in unexpected and hidden gems all over the island too. Orkney is a place surrounded by endless amounts of inspiration no matter where you go and what your specific interests may be.”

Enjoy some of Sarah’s favourite images of Orkney below and check out her Instagram for more of her work.

Picture of sun setting over sea and cliffs

“At the end of a long summer’s day, the Birsay coastline is the perfect place to watch the sunset. This photograph was taken at the Skiba Geo, a small sheltered beach located next to a 19th century Fisherman’s Hut. On a peaceful day, this is a great place to listen to the soft sounds of the sea accompanied by coastal birds.”

Picture of cliffs looking out to sea

“The walk to the Brough of Deerness has always been a personal favourite. The cliff top scenery alongside the trail offers impressive views and a chance to listen to the waves. Upon arrival you are greeted with interesting geology and a stone staircase that leads you to the Brough or to the Little Burra Geo just below. The rock formations that cocoon the shore feel almost otherworldly.”

Picture of garden with path

“You may be mistaken for thinking this photograph was taken in a tropical location! However, this is a snapshot of Tankerness House Gardens situated in the centre of Kirkwall. During the summer months, this is an idyllic place to visit and enjoy the array of shrubs and flowers in bloom.”

Picture of the Cliffs of Yesnaby in Orkney

“Yesnaby is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful locations on the Orkney mainland. The rugged stretch of coastline offers impressive geological formations and spectacular views that look over the North Sea.  On this particular day, the clouds were rolling in and the sunshine quickly disappeared, however, the deep earthy tones of the landscape and rocks were still extraordinary.”

Picture of sunlight through trees above a garden wall

“Many people believe that Orkney does not have any trees, which isn’t entirely true. This photograph was taken just outside of Binscarth woods in Finstown, one of a few woodland areas in Orkney. Echoes of the wind can be heard through the trees along with the sounds of birds. The sheltered surroundings make for a very peaceful walk.”

Picture of a Highland Cow

“Highland cows (or hairy coos!) are certainly Scottish icons! There are a few fields around Orkney where you will be able to find these beautiful animals. Their lovely temperament and curious nature made for a great impromptu photoshoot!”
