After a few very quiet months during lockdown, the team at the distillery and our Albert Street store are really looking forward to having visitors to talk to again! Here’s a quick lowdown on who you’ll meet when you come to visit…
Graham Bruce | Visits and Retail Operations Manager
Although he’s originally from Aberdeen, Graham’s wife Laura is Orcadian so the couple used to come to Orkney every year on holiday and moved here permanently in 2016, in time for their son to start school. Graham loves watching the waves crashing on the beach at Marwick on a windy day and seeing the puffins on nearby cliffs; his favourite Highland Park is 16 Year Old Wings of The Eagle.
Charlotte Harrison | Visitor Experience Manager, Distillery and Albert Street
Originally from Edinburgh, Charlotte moved to Orkney in 1999, after ten years in Miami, Florida – a move she describes as something of a culture shock! Charlotte spends a lot of time running up Wideford Hill – the views are amazing from the top (you can see the whole of the Orkney mainland on a clear day) – and still counts INGVAR as one of her favourite whiskies, best enjoyed outside with friends and a fire.
Sergio Paolo | Brand Ambassador
Born in Positano, on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Sergio lived and worked in London and the Middle East before moving to Orkney in 2011. He fell in love with the islands when visiting his wife’s family who live here and wanted his younger son to grow up in a small community, something he enjoyed in his own childhood. Sergio’s favourite spot is Birsay Beach and he loves all Highland Park whiskies, particularly our 25 Year Old.
James Watson | Senior Visitor Experience Host, Distillery
One of our longest serving members of staff, James has been with the distillery for 15 years and can trace his Orcadian lineage, through his mother, for considerably longer – well over 500 years in fact, right back to the 1400s. He says the locals are just beginning to accept him now! James’s favourite Highland Park is our 30 Year Old, which he describes as smooth, delicate, sophisticated, complex and well-rounded.
John Strachan | Senior Visitor Experience Host, Distillery
Although he hasn’t always lived on the islands, John is a born and bred Orcadian whose favourite place here is Stromness. He’s worked at the distillery for four years now and recommends our 21 Year Old (August 2019 release), which he describes as ‘a constant surprise’ with every sip delivering something new. We couldn’t agree more!
Karen Worton | Senior Visitor Experience Host, Distillery
Karen’s favourite Highland Park is Dragon Legend – smooth and beautifully balanced with warm spices, aromatic peat smoke and a lovely sweetness – perfect for the colder months ahead. She loves the name too! Originally from the West Midlands, Karen followed family north and was attracted by the remoteness, wild weather and beautiful landscapes of Orkney – her favourite spot is Birsay.
Keith Palmer | Senior Visitor Experience Host, Distillery
Keith moved here in 2018, following a circuitous route from Swindon, via London and Birmingham. Falling in love with the islands during a family holiday, he decided Orkney was the perfect place to live. Apart from the distillery (of course!) Keith’s favourite place is St Margaret’s Hope and he loves the wonderfully rich flavours and amazing finish of our iconic 18 Year Old Viking Pride.
Ann Donohoe | Senior Administrator, Distillery
Originally from Glasgow, Ann moved to Orkney 24 years ago to create a different life for herself and her family. She’s been with Highland Park for five years now and is a big fan of 18 Year Old Viking Pride, which she describes as very smooth and appealing to people new to whisky. Among the many amazing places to visit in the islands, Ann counts Ring of Brodgar as her favourite.
Popping into our Albert Street store before you visit the distillery? Here’s who you’ll meet…
Dean Bassett | Retail Experience Host, Albert Street
Dean started working with Highland Park at Albert Street back in February 2019 and the excitement of the new store opening its doors, a few weeks later on 8th May, still makes him smile. A design and development upholsterer by trade, Dean is originally from the Rhondda Valleys in South Wales and moved to Orkney two years ago – his favourite spot here is the Brough of Birsay.
Charlotte Groat | Retail Experience Host, Albert Street
Charlotte joined the team at our Albert Street store in May 2019. Born and bred in Orkney, her favourite place to visit on the islands is Scapa Beach and she recommends a dram of 18 Year Old Viking Pride as a night cap.
