Our Journey Towards Lower Impact Packaging

Our Journey Towards Lower Impact Packaging

Highland Park 12 Year Old Single Malt Whisky

To achieve our net zero goals, we must lower the environmental impact of our packaging. This means increasing our local sourcing, reducing the volume of materials we use and increasing our recycled and recyclable packaging content.

INCREASING LOCALLY SOURCED, RECYCLED AND RECYCLABLE MATERIALS IN OUR PACKAGING

  • Since 2019, our packaging team has worked hard to increase the volume of recyclable, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified and UK sourced materials used in our packaging supply chain.
  • Today, 95% of our packaging materials are sourced in the UK and 95% of our paper and board materials are FSC certified.
  • 90% of our paper and board packaging is also recyclable, with a target to increase this to 98% by 2025. In addition, as a mandatory practice, all of our packs now include recyclability messaging via QR code access.
  • Our core range packs are now 98% recyclable, and we will begin to ship our new Global Travel Retail packs over the course of the summer this year, which will also be 98% recyclable. We are committed to improving this and are working towards 100% recyclable packaging by 2030.

REDUCING THE VOLUME OF PACKAGING MATERIALS THAT WE USE

  • Glass weight is a key focus in our drive to reduce the volume of materials we use, as it contributes to overall shipping weight and therefore distribution related emissions.
  • We are currently exploring ways to reduce bottle weights across our core range by 10% by 2030.

PILOTING LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS (LCA)

  • We are currently working with environmental consultants to pilot Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) on the future repackaging of our core Highland Park 12-Year-Old with a view to rolling out LCA trials across our Packaging Technology and New Product Design (NPD) teams over the course of 2024.
  • By establishing LCA now, we will have a deeper understanding of how each material, component and process impacts on product life cycle, enabling our teams to consider this at the early design stages of products across our full range.
