Orkney-based designer Kirsteen Stewart is a designer and visual communicator of extraordinary talent. In 2009, she launched her own fashion label, store and studio here in Kirkwall and, since May, has been helping us tell Highland Park’s and Orkney’s stories through our new visitor experience store in Albert Street.
Working with colour, movement, symbols, images and props, Kirsteen both entertains and educates audiences through visual storytelling. Sourcing and displaying the work of local craftspeople in our Albert Street store, she’s brought a beautifully nuanced interpretation of island culture vividly to life for our visitors. In her own words: “Highland Park is so much more than whisky. It tells the story of people of Orkney, the community and its heritage. It’s about passion, tenacity, courage and perseverance.”
Inspired by Orkney
As a fashion designer, Kirsteen brings creativity and colour into everyday life through her joyful collections of womenswear and accessories, which feature vibrant print designs, bold graphics and a vivid spectrum of colour. Having cut her creative teeth in the fashion houses of New York, her own label focuses on sustainable and ethical production techniques and draws on the local landscape and her own experience of island life for inspiration. Orkney’s dramatic open skies, rugged coastlines and endlessly moving seascapes infuse Kirsteen’s work as she confidently plays with scale, texture and motion.
Kirsteen’s collections are sold to a loyal local following from her studio in Orkney, and to international customers via her online shop and selected stockists in the UK, Europe and USA. To find out more about her work or to make a purchase, visit kirsteenstewart.co.uk.
